Imagine the possibilities………………… With Fiber Optic Lighting Fiber optics have been around for some time now; but to understand how it works can give you an insight as to why so many people are switching from conventional fluorescent or incandescent lamps to Fiber Optics. As you are already aware, aircraft cabin interiors tend to look faded or washed out after a period of time. What you may not realize is that the lighting system is helping to advance this deterioration. Most people realize that UV and IR causes photochemical damage; but few know the extent of that damage. Fluorescent lamps are about 8% UV and 70% IR whereas filament lamps are 1% UV but 94% IR. This is not only wasted energy that doesn't make a light any brighter, it is also damaging to your new interior and causes heat that will need to be eliminated by an air conditioning system. The more heat, the more energy wasted. New interiors don't come cheap and neither does fuel. Now factor in the EMI and RFI caused by conventional lighting and you may be stuck with remotes that just won't work or video screens that have distortions. To eliminate these problems, Fiber Optic Lighting was introduced into aircraft in 1994. Now fiber optic lighting can be used to light the entire cabin. Because of its flexibility, it can be shaped to match virtually any interior design. With a life of more than 20 years, you will never have to change the fiber and since the light source is remotely located, there is no heat build up in the cabin. Fiber optic cable has no UV or IR so your fine fabrics will be protected. With many fiber sizes and configurations, fiber optic cable can be designed into new aircraft or used for a complete retrofit. Virtually all lighting AD's are eliminated using fiber optic lighting. Whether used for wash lighting, accent or spotlights; Fiber Optics is the best option all around. Avtec has created
